A review of The Bike Outlet by Ian McLean written on Monday 18th of May 2009
I recently purchased a new Claude Butler Urban 400 cycle from the Bike Outlet together with a number of accessories, one of which was a set of full size mudguards. I had already looked at the picture of the bike on their web site which showed the bike with "my"
mudguards fitted. When purchasing the mudguards I had questioned whether I should buy a "short" front mudguard and was told that the full length ones were better. The mudguards arrived minus the majority of the necessary fittings. After contacting Bike Outlet new fittings were sent, again insufficient in that no rear fork bolt was sent;the front fork bolt was too short;no bolts for fitting the guards to the frame.
More importantly the front guard does not fit! Bike Outlet told me that they DO NOT fit without a "slight"
modification i.e chop off part of the guard! When asked why the picture shows a bike with full guard I was told it was for illustation only! No mention of this necessary "mod" was ever commented upon during my purchase.I am appalled that my legitimate complaint re the deceptive nature of their photo was treated with utter contempt by the person with whom I spoke.I was offerred a refund ,but no account was taken of the fact that the rear guard had already been fitted and the fact that packing and posting a set of mudguards would entail some effort on my part.
In my view their web photo contravenes the "Trade Descriptions Act " in that it is deliberately misleading.
