A review of The Alterations Shop by Jacob Parker written on Monday 2nd of December 2013
I had a coat, which I bought online. It was much too big for me, but it fit on the shoulders, so should be able to be altered. I was quoted £40 for for it to be brought in and made to fit.
By splitting the side panels and sewing them back to each other, he was able to bring it in by a small amount—but not enough.
The next day, I came back in looking for it to be taken in more. He insisted that it couldn't be done—insisting it was how the garment was meant to look—but after much questioning, he offered to put in darts (which he incorrectly called ʻpleatsʼ). It didn't do much, but I also later noticed that he had put the two darts were on the same side of the coat, and none on the other. This meant the coat was taken in more on one side than the other, and looked uneven. I believe he would have noticed this as he ironed in the darts, but simply didn't bother to correct his mistake.
I took it to another tailor on Goodramgate, who offered to do the job—which was no less than the original job—for £35. He immediately took out the darts of this tailor. Upon returning, he let me know that the splitting the panels was very unprofessional, and pointed out that all the stitches were sewn on the outside rather than on the inside—a technique used to make the stitches invisible invisible.
To summarise: the work he did has left odd seems in random places on the coat, which do not help. The leftovers from the darts he did is still visible. The thread used was very different to the original. He has done no good to the garment, but damage, and still managed to charge more than the second tailor..
